Research Paper on Environmental Insults and Congenital Heart Defects
Noora and her mentor explored how maternal environmental factors influence a child’s risk of developing congenital heart defects (CHD). Thus, in her review paper, she elucidated the correlation between various environmental exposures during maternity (air pollutants, carcinogens, chemicals) and the development of CHD. The development of CHD is largely genetic, however, Noora was interested in exploring an epigenetic component that is more prevalent in recent studies. Her overall goal with this paper is to bring a new dimension to existing knowledge and disseminate the information to the general public.
Noora is a 17 year-old high schooler from Sunnyvale, CA.
Briana is an amazing mentor! She stepped out of her comfort zone to help explore a subject I've always been passionate about. Furthermore, she matched my excitement and was always enthusiastic, not only about guiding me, but learning with me. She walked me through every step of this process, from researching to writing, with a kindness and passion I can only hope to mimic one day. I have gained knowledge and experience that will be incredibly helpful in the future.
